MiMedx Group History

MiMedx Group History

MiMedx Group, Inc. is an emerging biomaterials company that was formed by combining two early stage medical device start-up companies, MiMedx Inc. and SpineMedica Corporation. In July of 2007, MiMedx, Inc. acquired SpineMedica Corporation, and formed the subsidiary SpineMedica, LLC. MiMedx Group, Inc. was then formed through a reverse merger with a public shell company in February 2008. From the date of the creation of MiMedx Group, Inc. through the end of 2009, the Company operated MiMedx, Inc. and SpineMedica separately. Effective in January of 2010, the management team and operations have been combined and we are all operating under the MiMedx Group entity, and our operations are discussed and reported in terms of our CollaFix® and HydroFix® technologies. In January 2011, Mimedx Group acquired Surgical Biologics, a leading processor of amnion tissue for use in a variety of surgical implants. Surgical Biologics is operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of MiMedx Group, Inc.

AmnioFix® History

Amnion tissue use has been documented as far back as the early 1900s, and over the past several years has seen resurgence. After nearly two decades of human tissue experience, Surgical Biologics founders John Daniel and Randall Spencer had the vision to apply modern proprietary processing techniques to placental tissue to create unique ophthalmic, spinal, orthopedic, and dental implants. Surgical Biologics combined with MiMedx Group in early 2011.

CollaFix® History

The breakthrough collagen processing technology, CollaFix®, is the product of nearly a decade of intense research by Thomas Koob, PhD and his staff of researchers at the Shriners Hospital for Children and the University of South Florida. Dr. Koob's inspiration to develop this technology came years ago from his observations of the unique and powerful properties of the egg case of a skate, which amazingly sustains the egg case through turbulent months at sea. Dr. Koob studied these properties and asserted that these qualities could be replaced and applied as tendon and ligament prostheses.

HydroFix® History

The HydroFix® technology originated at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. In the late 1990's, several graduate students and Professor David Ku, MD, PhD discovered a method for producing a very durable and strong hydrogel material. The value of the new biomaterial for medical device applications was identified, and subsequently licensed to SaluMedica in 1997. By 2000 the first product using the technology was cleared through the FDA. Clearances in Europe were also obtained. SaluMedica focused on orthopedic applications, leaving open the possibility of licensing the technology to other markets. SpineMedica Corporation was formed in 2005 when all spine applications of the technology were licensed from SaluMedica. SpineMedica later became a subsidiary of MiMedx Group.
